Four Final Fantasy Games Have Joined GOG's Preservation Program

The Steam Deck can play much more than just games from Steam, and while Epic gives away lots of games for free, GOG has a lot of appeal to get games from as well. The storefront focuses on DRM-free games, which means these games don't require playing through any program like Steam. On top of that, the GOG Preservation Program exists to preserve games, including some that can't be found anywhere else, while the GOG team updates them for modern devices with fixes. And there have been some new games that officially joined the program from the Final Fantasy series.

Despite these games not being on Steam, they are playable on the Steam Deck. You can use either the Heroic Games Launcher or NonSteamLaunchers to set it up, but there are other options like Unifideck if you have the Decky Launcher.

The four games from the Final Fantasy series that have joined are:

Final Fantasy 3 (3D Remake) - $6.39 (60% Off)

Final Fantasy 4 (3D Remake) - $6.39 (60% Off)

Final Fantasy 8 Remastered - $7.99 (60% Off)

Final Fantasy 9 - $8.39 (60% Off)

Each of the games are on a 60% off sale until February 7th, so getting it now is going to be the best way to save as much money as possible. They all have controller support, achievements, and cloud saves, making them great to play on the Deck.

Now, why should you purchase on GOG over Steam? Well, the biggest reason would be preservation. Games purchased on GOG are DRM-free, and as part of the Preservation Program, the games won't be taken down. GOG will be making sure to support the game and keep it going, even if the original developer has stopped. There's security that comes with owning a DRM-free copy of a game, while games from Steam come in the form of licenses, which means they could be revoked for any reason. It's rare for that to happen, but it could.

Still, this is great to see more games coming to GOG, and for the cheap price, having that kind of protection with it being DRM-free is great.
